What happened to Marcel Duchamp’s famous “looker”? …

… That observer with the capacity to judge?

Make way for the looker-tagger! Today, with all eyes turned to the computer screen, the “looker” is surfing, scanning, tagging, i.e. interacting. “Tagging to share” has replaced Cézanne’s “copying to see”. From the depth of his studio, the artist today is interested in his digital identity. “Who’s talking about me on the internet? How was my last exhibition viewed? Am I known abroad?” … Power to the user!

Selection and Method

Selection and Method

The initial list of 100 French artists is established by Alexia Guggémos. She takes into account the artists visible and if they have been much talked about recently. In order to rank and compare French artists with international art stars (outside of Asia), 50 names have been chosen as per the official art market ranking in ArtReview magazine.

The tool LINKFLUENCE monitors all information published on the internet using the “full name” (first name + last name) of the artist, associated to the words “art” and “artist”. The study considers the following categories: news, blogs, article comments, images, videos, short messages (eg. Tweets). For 6 months, from April 1st to September 30th, 2013, daily measures are made.
